{In My Kitchen} June 2015 – Plus Ate Six

Pinch, punch first of the month. Yay! It’s June 1st and you know what that means right?

Without further ado, here’s what’s going on In My Kitchen this month….

In My Kitchen…..

…there’s a new cookbook. I cooked along with the lovely Lorraine from Not Quite Nigella when she shared the recipe for Pea, Corn & Feta Fritters, not realising there was even a prize involved and I was one of four lucky readers to win a book. It’s great informative read and it’s where my food and baking has been going for a while so I’m thoroughly enjoying flicking through it, although I’m yet to bake anything. Watch this space!

In My Kitchen…

…are hemp seeds. I bought them on impulse from The Avocado Lady without really knowing what to do with them because I know they are ‘healthy’ but that’s as far as I’ve gotten apart from throwing a handful into a watermelon, banana and coconut water smoothie yesterday. Any other ideas or links would be most welcome!

In My Kitchen….

…is a present from my neighbour Scott.

He experiments a lot more than me in the kitchen and is slowly working his way through Fuchsia Dunlop’s Every Grain of Rice. His ayi, Bei Hua, made a batch of Sichuan pepper oil for him and I was the lucky recipient of a small bottle. He said it took her a couple of hours to do in the wok so I’m pretty sure I won’t be making it myself when it runs out. It’s absolutely gorgeous though – warm and tingly rather than fiercely hot.

In My Kitchen…

….are lychees. I buy a big bunch of them at a time for about 35RMB and we can demolish the whole lot in one sitting. I thought of soaking some in vodka or doing a fancy recipe for the blog but I can’t get past just peeling and popping them out of their skins……

In My Kitchen….

…are some new coasters and furoshika from Tokyo. We did our annual pilgrimage in May for a weekend of sumo and sushi and I popped into a lovely little shop in Azabujuban and couldn’t resist buying something.

I also brought back two jars of yuzu mustard – well that’s what I call it, I have no idea what the label says! It is quite sharp and hot {probably wasabi now I’m thinking about it} and I smear it on toasted bread and then grill cheese on top. Actually it goes on everything – grilled meats, tortilla as well. If I had an unlimited supply I’d probably go through a small jar a month.

In My Kitchen….

…is a resurrected Lucy Liu under the latest crochet creation. I couldn’t stop myself and went a bit mad with the colours when I saw how pretty they came up with the black. And then I started cursing when it came time to tidy up the ends. As for Lucy, well I thought I’d killed her off but as usual Celia saved the day and talked me through feeding her properly and she bounced back – and Rich’s Mum now has some dehydrated Lucy in Germany.
